La cosecha

After about three months indoors or some long six months outdoors, the time has come to reap the fruit of our work. After a vegetation period during which we gave shape to our plants, fought the springtime plagues and used fertilizers to fight the shortages that appeared, flowering is finally about to come to an end.

Daya Foundation

Cannabis.es took the opportunity this summer to travel to Santiago de Chile and talk to the Daya Foundation people, the first therapeutic centre specialized in cannabis solutions in all of Latin America. They are also pioneers in the struggle for regulation of cannabis in Chile. Daya in Sanskrit means “compassionate love” and it is precisely this vision that is key to their success: a genuine commitment to the wellbeing of their patients and the conviction to fight human suffering. And, also, the desire to clear the name of the plant.

We have the priviledge to publish here an interview to Cheryl Shuman by Laura Rueda. But we need to poit out that we do not agree with the idea that Marijuana can cure cancer. That has not been proved and several research are stil ongoing to understand which is the real potential of this plant. Her Cheryl share with us her personal experience and view.

Interview to Paulina Boadilla

Amidst a series of interminable earthquakes that have been striking Chile for several days, Paulina Boadilla took some time to chat with Cannabis.es and, getting around the technical difficulties, share her story with us, as well as her expert opinion and great heart. Mamá Cultiva is a non-profit foundation where mothers of children with refractory epilepsy, cancer and other pathologies, get together and promote the use of cannabis resin.

Madres coraje de Peru

The struggle of a group of mothers has revived the debate on drug legalization in Peru. The mothers, organized in the association “Buscando Esperanza” (“Searching for Hope”), have brought about institutional measures in favour of medical cannabis. The association is formed by mothers of children ailed with chronic neurological illnesses and aims for regulation of marijuana with medical purposes as well as promoting homegrowing.

I was in absolute shock when I witnessed it. The seizure was real and the patient was a kid. He wasn’t suffering “grand mal” seizures, but they were convulsions alright, this was no joke or fake. A kid lies in bed while his brain is shooting “incoherent” electric impulses that cause the convulsions that we see. Those sparks in the brain cause all the muscles in the body to move without the patient wanting them to. Also, while that electric storm takes place in the brain, the body is trying to keep all the basic vital functions working, i.e. breathing, in order to stay alive. That’s what seizure means.

Good morning friends of Cannabis.es,

Welcome on board to resume our journey through indoor growing. This time we will start a comparison between two parallel crops, with same varieties and using white reflective layers in the grow boxes. On one of them we will use LED lighting and 2 MaxSpect R420R screens  –new model, still on trial, it needs 180 watts per screen, total 360w consumption. Creates, according to the manufacturers, a luminosity that equals 600w, but I’d say it’s more on the lines of 500w, as we saw in other chapters-, and another one of HPS 400w and Xtrasun luminaire.

This morning, while searching on the internet for an oatmeal recipe to make my children for breakfast (experts say it's good for their bones), right after the first options I came across a video called Narco Crops (Narco Cultivos, in the original Spanish), by Azucena Sánchez and Maria Degand. It is quite a beautiful little film, fresh to the point of bordering on the type of visual poetry  that reminds one of certain scenes from Tarkovski's Stalker or, more obliquely, of Peter Greenaway's Water Wrackets. The content of the video consists of a map of Mexico drawn on the bottom of what appears to be a teflon-coated container, with the silhouette well outlined in white on a dark background.
